PRODUCT ADVICE

Which size of nugget is right for my bird?

Harrison’s Bird Foods are manufactured as Coarse, Fine, Superfine and Mash products. Most commonly larger birds such as Macaws, Cockatoos, African Greys, Amazons etc will eat the coarse ground food, smaller birds eg Parakeets, Cockatiels, Conures, Quakers etc will eat the fine ground food and canaries, budgies and finches will eat the superfine or mash. Usually the larger birds eat the larger nuggets and the smaller birds eat the smaller nuggets, although this is only a guide and some birds prefer a different size of nugget. It is best to serve the size which your bird prefers.

Should I choose High Potency or Adult Lifetime?

You should select High Potency Formula in these situations:
- You are converting from a seed based diet
- You have a young bird
- Your bird is moulting or has poor feather quality
- To bring your bird into breeding condition and throughout the breeding season
- Your bird is recovering from illness
- You own an African Grey, large Macaw, or Palm or Moluccan Cockatoo
- Your vet advises use of this formula for medical reasons

You should select Adult Lifetime Formula if:
- Your bird has been eating Harrison’s Bird Food for 6 months and is not one of the breeds requiring High Potency (see above)
- You have a diabetic bird
- To help prevent chronic egg laying (cockatiels)
- Your vet advises the use of this formula for medical reasons.

We recommend that nearly all birds start on the High Potency formula as many birds undergoing diet change are malnourished from their previous diets. All the body's systems have been somewhat compromised. To heal this as fast as possible we use High Potency as it has a slightly higher fat and calorie content which are both important in the quick restoration of the body's vital systems. However, as a maintanence diet most birds (those listed above excluded) do better on the lower fat and calorie content of the Adult Lifetime diet.

What size bag should I buy?

- As the food contains no artificial preservatives (as these can be harmful to a bird's health) each bag, once opened, should be used up in 6 to 8 weeks.
- Once established on the food, Amazons, African Grey, Macaws and other birds of a similar size will consume a 2.26kg bag of coarse ground food before it loses any taste. For smaller birds, or birds on Fine, Superfine or Mash, a smaller bag would be more appropriate. Obviously if you have more than one bird you will need to monitor how quickly you use a bag of a certain size and make subsequent purchases accordingly.

How many bags should I buy?

Most of our products have a 'best before' date of at least 6 months in the future, and many have a best before of up to a year. As postage is a fixed price for larger orders you should considering buying a few bags at a time to save you money. If you wish to know the current best before dates of any of our food please contact us

What should I use for hand-rearing?

Juvenile Formula provides the correct nutrition for continued development.
Recovery Formula provides the critical nutrients to stabilise injured and debilitated birds. In conjunction with Neonate Formula, it provides the diets for rearing all wild bird nestlings.
