The Principles of Avian Nutrition - The Theory and the Practice

This is the expanded text of the paper given by Brian Stockdale BVM&S MRCVS at the Parrot Society meeting at Chester Zoo, May 2003.

It outlines the theory behind the provision of a balanced diet and contrasts this with the diets which are commonly feed to pet avians. The effects of malnutrition are discussed.

Appendix 1: Essential Nutrients

The appendix to the above paper lists the essential dietary constituents.

This is by necessity a complex list but should give those only wishing an overview, sufficient accessible material.

Calcium Metabolism in Grey Parrots - The effects of Husbandry

This paper was given by Michael Stanford BVSc MRCVS of Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic, at the annual meeting of the Association of Avian Veterinarians in Monterey, California in 2002. The author reports his initial work on the measurement of calcium blood levels in African Grey parrots on a commercial parrot farm in the UK. This original research forms part of Michael Stanford's work towards his Fellowship of the Royal College.

An update of his work was presented at the Harrison's UK Avicultural Day in September 2003 and the text of that paper will appear on this site in due course.
